Home Automation & Smart Home Installation in North New Jersey

Smart home gear is easy to buy and easy to get wrong. Switches that need a neutral wire your 1960s colonial doesn't have, dimmers that flicker, hubs that won't talk to each other — this is where an electrician who actually knows the products earns their keep.

Bright Ideas Electric designs and installs home automation across North New Jersey: smart switches and dimmers, lighting scenes, smart thermostats, automated exterior and security lighting, energy monitoring, and integration with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home.

We start with how you actually live — which lights you touch every day, what should happen when you leave or come home — and build a system that your whole family can use without a manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smart switches or smart bulbs — which is better?
For most homes, smart switches. They control the fixture no matter what bulbs are in it, keep working like normal switches for guests and family, and don't fail one bulb at a time. Smart bulbs make sense for color effects and lamps. We typically design around switches with bulbs as accents.
My older home has no neutral wire at the switches. Can I still get smart switches?
Usually, yes. There are quality no-neutral smart switches, and where they're not the right fit we can pull a neutral to key locations. Older North Jersey homes are our bread and butter — we'll find the practical path instead of quoting a whole-house rewire you don't need.
Do you set up the apps and integrations, or just the wiring?
Both. We install the hardware and get the system talking — rooms and scenes configured, devices named sensibly, and Alexa or Google running the lights before we leave. You get a working system, not a box of gear and a YouTube playlist.
What is home energy monitoring and is it worth it?
A whole-home energy monitor installs at your panel and shows exactly where your electricity goes, circuit by circuit, in an app. It's great for spotting energy hogs, verifying solar production, and catching problems like a failing well pump early. Installation takes a couple of hours.
Can you automate outdoor and security lighting?
Yes — dusk-to-dawn and motion-activated fixtures, smart-controlled landscape lighting, and holiday lighting circuits on schedules. Automated exterior lighting is one of the best security upgrades per dollar you can make.
