What is an interlock kit and how does it work?
An interlock is a mechanical slide installed on your electrical panel that makes it physically impossible for your generator breaker and your main breaker to be on at the same time. It lets your portable generator safely power circuits through your panel while guaranteeing power can't backfeed into the utility lines.
Why is backfeeding a generator through a dryer outlet dangerous?
A so-called 'suicide cord' energizes your home's wiring and the utility lines outside it with no protection. It can electrocute utility workers repairing the lines, destroy your generator when power is restored, and it violates the National Electrical Code. A proper inlet and interlock installation eliminates all of those risks.
