How do I know I need a rewire instead of just a panel upgrade?
A new panel only helps if the wiring feeding it is sound. Signs you need a rewire include knob-and-tube or cloth-wrapped cable, two-prong ungrounded outlets, frequent dimming or overheating, aluminum branch circuits, or a renovation that is already opening the walls. We often do both — a 200-amp service upgrade plus a rewire — and we'll tell you which one your house actually needs.
Does knob-and-tube wiring have to be replaced all at once?
Not always. Insurers and buyers often want it gone, and any room we open up should come out with modern grounded cable. For an occupied house we can phase the work — kitchen and baths first, then bedrooms, then remaining circuits — so you are not living in a construction zone for weeks. We'll map the existing runs and give you a staged plan with prices.
Can you rewire a house we still live in?
Yes. Occupied-home rewires are most of this work in North Jersey. We work room by room, keep power on to the rest of the house, and clean up at the end of each day. Full gut renovations are faster because the walls are already open, but you do not have to move out for a rewire.
How long does a whole-house rewire take?
An open-wall rewire on a typical single-family home is often a few days to a week, plus the municipal inspection. An occupied-home rewire spread room by room takes longer on the calendar but less disruption per visit. The walkthrough is where we give you a real duration, not a guess from a photo.
Will I need a new panel at the same time?
Often, yes — especially if you are still on 60 or 100 amps, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, or a box with no room for the new circuits a rewire creates. We quote the panel and the rewire together so you see the full picture, and we handle both under one permit when they go together.
