How many circuits does a modern kitchen need?
Code requires at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits for countertop receptacles, plus dedicated circuits for major appliances — typically the range or wall oven, dishwasher, disposal, microwave, and refrigerator. With lighting, most full kitchen renovations end up with seven or more circuits. We plan the circuit layout around your actual appliance list.
Do kitchen outlets need GFCI protection?
Yes — all countertop receptacles must be GFCI protected under current code, and most kitchen circuits also require AFCI protection in New Jersey. If your renovation is opening the walls anyway, it's the ideal time to bring everything up to current standards.
Can you add outlets to a kitchen island?
Yes. Island and peninsula receptacles are a standard part of our kitchen work — we route the wiring during rough-in and place receptacles so they're usable without being an eyesore. If you're adding a pop-up or under-counter unit, we'll wire for that too.
My house still has knob & tube wiring. Can you replace it during the renovation?
Absolutely — a kitchen renovation with open walls is the cheapest moment you'll ever have to replace old knob & tube or cloth-wrapped wiring. We replace it with modern grounded wiring and can extend the rewire beyond the kitchen if you want to tackle more of the house at once.
Do you work with general contractors and kitchen designers?
Yes, regularly. We coordinate rough-in and finish visits around your contractor's schedule, handle the electrical permit and inspections, and communicate directly with the GC so the electrical never holds up your project.
